![]() ![]() The air filter will not cause the symptoms you describe. There are a number of other things that can cause your engine to stall such as restricted fuel filter, restricted fuel tank vent, improper carburetor adjustments, and carburetor/fuel system or ignition system troubles. It seems the transmission was producing more heat than it should which caused engine temps to raise and the vapor lock. Vapor lock will usually manifest itself after shutting the saw off and then trying to start the engine within a few minutes after the fuel has been sitting in the carb and has had a chance for the radiating engine heat to raise the temperature of the fuel system components to a point where the fuel can vaporize. However, it would be rare to have an MS 440 vapor lock while running since the saw's fuel tank and carburetor are well isolated from the heat of the engine and fuel that is flowing does not have as great a chance of getting hot enough to turn it into vapor. We usually see most fuel related troubles during the transition of Winter into Spring when Mother Nature starts bringing warmer temperatures and the remaining inventories of Winter blend fuel get delivered to the gas stations. We’ve designed our turnkey fuel supply system around this approach for two reasons. At Prestige Motorsports, our favorite method is to install an Aeromotive in-tank fuel pump and return system. ![]() Winter fuel vaporizes at much lower temperatures than standard gasoline. There are several ways to solve vapor lock problems, including installing an electric fuel pump or adding a plastic carb spacer. Enthusiasts universally blame the pump in these situations, when the reality is usually the fault of the fuel delivery system design. Vapor in the pump reduces cooling, causing the pump to overheat, which closes up the clearances and makes the pump lock up. Put simply, air lock is a constriction in flow that happens when a gas gets trapped in a pipe. There are several symptoms that may point to vapor lock. Today, we’re talking about air lock in pipe systems. Yes, the fuel sitting in the sun could cause the gasoline to vaporize more easily and it is likely that winter grade fuel is still being delivered in many areas. That’s when the pump quits working because it cannot pump a vapor. Vapor lock occurs when fuel overheats and vaporizes in a fuel line, carburetor, or fuel injector, disrupting the correct air-fuel ratio. ![]()
